Although not a reletively high pass, it's very steep with lots of switch-backs for over 4 miles up, and 4 miles down. Very narrow and not good pavement. No guard rails either. It's hard to imagine the old vehicles from the 30's and 40's going over this hill, but they did. There was no I-40 then!
